Artists from The Chicago Samba



MoAcyr Marchini (Director & Founder), Cavaquinho player, composer, singer and percussionist. Native of Brazil, learned traditional samba music when he was growing up in Sao Paulo, specialized in Batucadas (percussion ensembles), and pagodes (a style of vocal music with a samba rhythm), it could be heard on the streets corners, in open bars, on the beaches, in parks, and on soccer fields throughout the year.
By the age of 12 he performed his first recital. During his teenage years, he played in a Samba School (neighborhood association producing Carnaval parades).
After moving to the United States in l985, Moacyr continued to be very involved with samba music, founding in Illinois the Chicago Samba; in St. Louis, Samba Bom. Moacyr teaches residencies, workshops and perform the Sounds of Brazil program at elementary schools.
Moacyr leads percussion workshops in the Midwest-USA, Europe, and Brazil.
Mr Marchini returns often to his country, where he studies with Samba masters, visit pagode gatherings. He also collects Brazilian music recordings and instruments.
